Kofi Akamani spent over ten years building a life and a career in southern Illinois. People around the Southern Illinois University Carbondale campus knew him as a dedicated teacher and mentor. On Saturday evening, September 19, 2026, that life came to a sudden end. Police officers found the 48-year-old professor shot near a house off Lake Road, right between Murphysboro and Carbondale.
Emergency crews rushed Akamani to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Doctors tried to save him, but his injuries were too severe. Medical staff pronounced him dead shortly after he arrived. The quiet rural stretch along Lake Road quickly filled with police lights and investigators.

Back on campus, news of his death hit students and fellow faculty members hard. Akamani joined SIU back in 2011 and earned a promotion to full professor in 2024. He directed the doctoral program in agricultural sciences and oversaw graduate studies in forestry. He spent endless hours helping young researchers find their footing.
His work reached far beyond Illinois. Born and raised in Ghana, Akamani built an international education before coming to the Midwestern United States. He studied in Ghana and Norway before earning his doctorate at the University of Idaho. His main focus was helping small rural towns handle big environmental and economic changes.
Over the years, Akamani became a respected leader in global conservation efforts. He served as editor-in-chief for the Journal of Sustainable Forestry and contributed to the Fifth National Climate Assessment. Just months before his death, in June 2026, peers elected him secretary general of the International Union of Biological Sciences.
While colleagues remembered his career, police focused on what happened at the scene. Deputies arrested 35-year-old Betty Akamani at the Lake Road property shortly after the shooting. Authorities took her straight to the Jackson County Jail on serious charges.
Betty Akamani now faces counts of first-degree murder and aggravated battery. Her initial court date remains unconfirmed as the investigation continues. Friends, family, and students are left mourning a teacher who spent his life building up communities around the world.
