Newport News police are now treating a September morning shooting as a homicide following the death of the victim. Detectives are re-examining evidence gathered from the neighborhood where the shooting occurred.
The incident started shortly before 8 a.m. on September 8, 2026. Police officers responded to a 911 call reporting gunshots on the 6300 block of Grossman Place.

At the scene, officers located 34-year-old Naadirah Sheri Fussell with a gunshot wound. Emergency medical crews took over immediate care and transported her to a local hospital with severe, life-threatening injuries.
Fussell survived the initial emergency response and remained under medical care at the hospital for over a week. Medical staff worked to keep her stable while officers began gathering preliminary evidence at the site.
On September 16, 2026, eight days after she was admitted, Fussell succumbed to her injuries. Her death shifted the direction of the police response from a shooting investigation to an active murder case.
An autopsy conducted by the medical examiner formally classified her death as a homicide. That classification moved the case entirely to the police department’s homicide unit.
Investigators are still asking anyone with information about the morning of September 8 to come forward. The investigation remains open, and police have not named any suspects or released a potential motive.
