George Highfill left home in Cherokee on Friday for what should have been a normal trip down to Canton Lake. By Friday evening, the 63-year-old was dead, leaving folks back in Alfalfa County trying to figure out what went wrong on the water.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol confirmed Highfill drowned sometime during the day. State troopers got called out to the lake, pulled his body from the water, and opened an investigation. Beyond that basic timeline, law enforcement hasn’t said a word about what happened right before he went under.

People in Cherokee know the drive down to Canton Lake by heart. You take the two-lane roads south through farm country, a trip plenty of locals make when they want to catch fish or sit by the shore. Highfill was part of that small-town fabric, making his sudden death hit hard across the area.

Right now, the police report reads like a blank page. Investigators haven’t clarified if Highfill was out on a boat, swimming near the bank, or fishing off one of the ramps. Weather conditions and potential medical issues haven’t been mentioned either, keeping family and friends in the dark while they wait on official news.

Canton Lake sits about two miles north of Canton and roughly 18 miles southwest of Fairview. It covers nearly 8,000 acres of surface water and reaches depths of over 35 feet. Controlled by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the spot draws thousands of boaters and campers every weekend, but it can turn dangerous fast when something goes wrong.

Local folks spent Saturday talking in low voices about the loss. In a town the size of Cherokee, everyone knows everyone, or at least knows their family. Sudden bad news travels fast down Main Street, and people are waiting on troopers to share actual answers about his final hours.

For now, state troopers are keeping the case open while they piece together the timeline. Friends and relatives of Highfill are holding out hope that official findings come out soon to give them answers after a tough Friday loss.
