Friday morning at a local gas station turned into a crime scene before most people finished their morning coffee. Around 7:20 a.m. on September 18, gunfire broke out in the parking lot of the Wawa near Route 37 and Garfield Avenue in Toms River, New Jersey. Within minutes, police cruisers pulled into the lot with lights flashing, surrounding the convenience store.

Emergency responders found 42-year-old Bruce Gress on the ground with a gunshot wound to the head. Paramedics moved quickly, stabilizing him at the scene before rushing him down the highway to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.

Despite the best efforts of medical staff at the trauma center, Bruce Gress died from his injuries. What started as an ordinary morning errand ended in a sudden tragedy that shook his family and neighbors.

Bruce was a Toms River resident whose life meant far more than the tragic violence that ended it. Friends and family members now face a painful quiet, holding tight to photos, old messages, and everyday memories of a man who belonged to their community.

In the neighborhood, people are trying to process how fast everything changed. Simple things like a shared joke, a wave across the street, or a quick phone call have suddenly become precious keepsakes for those he left behind.

Detectives from the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, the Toms River Police Department, and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office spent the day sweeping the Wawa lot for evidence. They gathered surveillance footage, interviewed witnesses, and pieced together the moments leading up to the shooting.

Authorities identified 51-year-old Douglas Cobb, also of Toms River, as the shooter. Prosecutors charged Cobb with murder and weapons offenses while a massive search got underway across the region to bring him into custody.
