A Friday night ride through the city turned tragic when 15-year-old Daria Serkov lost her life in a brutal crash. Daria was riding on a bicycle with a 16-year-old friend around 9 p.m. in Manhattan’s East Village when a commercial truck struck them. Emergency responders rushed both girls to the hospital, but doctors could not save Daria. Her friend survived the wreck, but a young life ended on a busy neighborhood street before the weekend even started.

The crash went down right at the busy intersection of East 14th Street and First Avenue, just steps from Stuyvesant Town. Nighttime traffic was moving through the area as usual when the two teenagers made their way toward First Avenue. They were turning north onto the avenue alongside other vehicle traffic. Within seconds, a regular evening trip transformed into a scene of chaotic trauma.

Investigators with the NYPD reported that a 2021 Peterbilt commercial truck was traveling along the route at the same time. The truck driver, a 58-year-old man, was making a right turn onto northbound First Avenue. As the heavy rig swung through the turn, it collided directly with the bicycle carrying the two teenagers. The impact knocked both girls down onto the asphalt.

Medics quickly arrived at the crash scene and loaded both teenagers into ambulances. They rushed them straight to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue on Manhattan’s East Side. Doctors worked frantically to save Daria, but the 15-year-old was pronounced dead shortly after arriving. Her 16-year-old friend suffered multiple injuries during the collision, but medical staff listed her in stable condition.

The 58-year-old truck driver did not run off after the crash occurred. He pulled over immediately and stayed right there on the street until officers arrived. Police interviewed the driver at the scene as detectives began securing the area and gathering physical evidence. Authorities noted that there were no initial signs of driver impairment at the scene.

Local residents and neighborhood officials felt the shock of the news right away. Assembly Member Keith Powers, who represents the East Village area, posted his condolences online shortly after learning about the crash. He called the incident absolutely horrifying and expressed his deep sympathies for the families of both young victims. Powers emphasized that city leaders must take stronger action to protect bicyclists and prevent future street tragedies.

No charges or arrests were announced as collision investigators continued working to map out the exact sequence of events. First Avenue remains one of Manhattan’s busiest north-south thoroughfares, handling heavy commercial traffic every single day alongside bikes and foot traffic. NYPD detectives are still piecing together the final moments before the collision as a grieving family mourns the sudden loss of Daria Serkov.
