Wednesday night in Tuscaloosa County turned into a chaotic scene for first responders after a violent head-on collision on Highway 82 sent one local man to the hospital and claimed the life of a Florida driver. Kenneth Fields, a 39-year-old resident of Northport, was driving his pickup truck when the crash occurred late in the evening.

The two-vehicle accident happened at approximately 10:45 p.m., about five miles east of the Tuscaloosa city limits. Fields was operating a 2013 Ford F-150 pickup, traveling along a dark section of Highway 82 near mile marker 59.

Heading toward him was a 2026 Kia K4 driven by 24-year-old Ariel Burcham, who had traveled to Alabama from her hometown of Valrico, Florida. The two vehicles collided head-on in the middle of the roadway, causing extensive damage to both the compact car and the full-sized truck.

First responders arriving at mile marker 59 found a heavy scene spread across the road. Troopers and paramedics worked quickly to check on both drivers trapped in the aftermath. Burcham sustained fatal injuries from the force of the collision and died at the scene before she could be transported.

Fields was pulled from his Ford pickup by emergency personnel and treated at the crash site before being rushed by ambulance to DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa. Authorities confirmed he was admitted for medical treatment, though officials have not publicly detailed the exact extent of his injuries.

The stretch of Highway 82 where the wreck took place runs through rural farmland and timber county east of town. With minimal streetlights overhead, drivers relying strictly on headlights have very little room for error if another car shifts across the center stripe late at night.

Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s Highway Patrol Division are currently leading the ongoing investigation. Officers are working to piece together the events leading up to the impact, checking whether speed, weather, or driver distraction played a role in the fatal head-on collision.
