A late-night drive down a dark rural Kentucky highway turned into a frantic search when first responders found a wrecked vehicle with no driver inside. Emergency crews rushed to U.S. 641 in Lyon County around 8:50 p.m. Wednesday after a 911 call reported a violent crash. What they found on the roadside was a heavily damaged SUV resting on its roof, but the cabin was completely empty.

The driver was identified as 38-year-old Ashley Meads-Lemon of Greeley, Colorado. She was heading southbound on the two-lane road about four and a half miles north of Eddyville. Investigators say her 2007 Jeep Commander missed a curve near the intersection of Coleman-Doles Road, starting a path of destruction off the pavement.

After drifting off the asphalt, the Jeep crossed the shoulder and smashed into a residential mailbox across from Beck Road. The vehicle kept moving off-road for a considerable distance before slamming straight into a concrete culvert headwall.

The force of the impact flipped the SUV into a violent rollover. During the flips, Meads-Lemon was thrown clear of the vehicle. She landed far out in an adjacent cornfield, hidden by darkness and tall crops while her overturned truck sat empty near the road.

Deputies from the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office arrived alongside Kentucky State Police troopers. Realizing the driver was missing, officers fanned out into the dark fields on foot. They searched through the brush until they spotted Meads-Lemon lying motionless among the corn stalks.

Responders found her unresponsive with severe, life-threatening injuries. Emergency crews from Lyon County EMS and the Eddyville Fire Department worked quickly at the scene to stabilize her. Because of her critical state, officials immediately called in an AirEvac helicopter.

Authorities shut down U.S. 641 in both directions for ninety minutes to secure the crash scene and set up a landing zone. The medical helicopter landed nearby, loaded Meads-Lemon, and flew her south to a hospital in Nashville, Tennessee.

Back at the crash site, investigators began piecing together what caused the Jeep to leave the road. Lyon County Sheriff Brent White noted that speed and alcohol are under investigation as contributing factors. Deputies continue to work the case as family and friends hope for her recovery.
