A routine car wreck along Fawn River Road in Sturgis, Michigan, quickly turned into one of the most baffling missing person cases in St. Joseph County. The mystery began on the night of November 30, 2018.
Investigators learned that 23-year-old Brittany Shank was not alone before her vehicle hit the ditch. Reports indicated an unidentified man was riding with her right before the crash happened.

What went down inside the vehicle remains unclear. What is known is that Brittany ended up on a stranger’s doorstep without her shoes, injured and asking for somebody to dial 911.
A witness spotted Brittany once more shortly after she left that house. Yet by the time sheriff’s deputies arrived at the crash scene, both Brittany and the unknown man were nowhere to be found.
For years, detectives worked to identify the man and figure out where Brittany went next. The lack of clear answers left the whole town wondering what really took place along that quiet stretch of road.
Federal agents with the FBI Detroit Field Office eventually joined local deputies to launch a targeted search across parts of St. Joseph County. Crews used specialized technology to search rural ground and rule out potential leads.
Law enforcement stressed that the team search was a routine effort to follow up on information rather than a confirmed discovery. The case stays active, and deputies continue asking anyone with information about the crash or the passenger to contact authorities.
