Calvin Shepard died on a rural road on a Saturday morning, and his older sister Karalee died five days later in a hospital room. The loss of the two middle school students stunned the small town of Williamston, Michigan. By early the following week, green ribbons covered trees along main streets, and porch lights turned green across local neighborhoods.

The collision happened on September 5, 2026, along Grand River Avenue near North Meech Road. Calvin, 12, and Karalee, 13, were riding their bicycles together when a Ford Explorer struck both children. State police noted that both siblings had their helmets on during the ride.

First responders pronounced Calvin dead at the crash site shortly before noon. Karalee was transported to an emergency care unit with critical head trauma. Her death on September 10 shifted the town’s focus from praying for a recovery to supporting a grieving family.

Local residents quickly organized a community-wide tribute called a “green out.” Neighbors replaced standard porch lights with green bulbs and placed green bows on front doors and fence posts. Community members described the effort as an immediate way to show visibility and care for the Shepard family.

A GoFundMe page started by a friend from the family’s church surpassed $150,000 in donations within days. Organizers confirmed that all contributions go directly to Cody and Raquel Shepard to help cover medical bills, emergency expenses, and funeral costs.

The Michigan State Police crash unit continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision. The 64-year-old woman driving the Ford Explorer stayed at the scene, was not injured, and showed no signs of impairment, according to police reports.

A combined funeral service was set for both siblings at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on East Saginaw Street in East Lansing. Local residents plan to keep the green lights lit throughout the month in memory of Calvin and Karalee.
