A quiet Monday morning in Middlesex County turned upside down when 57-year-old William Norman Ellis Jr. lost his life in a single-vehicle truck accident. Ellis, a resident of nearby Hartfield, was behind the wheel on Burchs Mill Road when things went wrong fast.

According to state troopers, the wreck happened around 8:42 a.m. as Ellis drove west down the rural stretch of road. He was operating a 2023 International truck, a heavy commercial rig, when the vehicle suddenly veered off the right side of the pavement.

The heavy truck tore through the shoulder, smashing into a road sign before slamming hard into a utility pole. The violent impact sent the rig rolling over on its side, skidding off the roadway until it hit a tree.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene shortly after the 911 calls came in. First responders found the overturned truck wrecked against the timber, but the injuries Ellis suffered during the crash proved fatal right at the spot.

News of the sudden death hit the close-knit community of Hartfield especially hard. Neighbors and longtime friends spent the afternoon coming to terms with losing a man who had been a familiar face around the county for decades.

For the family members left behind, the sudden loss of Ellis created an immediate void. Relatives spent the day gathering together to lean on each other, struggling to make sense of a typical Monday routine that ended in tragedy.

Virginia State Police are still working to piece together what caused Ellis to drift off the road. For now, folks across Middlesex County are keeping his family in their thoughts as they deal with the painful road ahead.
