A late-night collision along Interstate 65 left an 18-year-old driver dead early Tuesday morning in Birmingham. The crash forced a sedan off the highway edge and down a steep incline near University Boulevard.
Officers with the Birmingham Police Department responded to the scene around 3:46 a.m. following reports of a sideswipe accident between a Cadillac ATS sedan and a motorcycle traveling northbound.

According to preliminary investigation details, the Cadillac clipped the motorcycle before losing traction. The sedan drifted off the main lanes and plunged down the embankment leading toward University Boulevard.
As the Cadillac tumbled down the slope, the violent motion threw the driver out of the vehicle. The car came to a stop near the bottom of the incline with heavy damage.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the driver as Jordin Jacobie Coles from Pleasant Grove. Medical personnel pronounced the 18-year-old dead at approximately 4:00 a.m.
Officials reported that the motorcyclist involved in the initial contact escaped major harm. The rider is expected to recover fully without requiring long-term medical care.
Traffic investigators shut down sections of northbound I-65 for several hours to gather evidence and map out the wreckage pattern. Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to contact local authorities.
