A heavy morning commute turned tragic on Tuesday along one of the busiest roadways in Baton Rouge. Police officers responded to a severe two-vehicle crash around 7:25 a.m. near the intersection of Perkins Road and Bles Avenue. The rollover collision claimed the life of 22-year-old driver Malachi Antoine and left another person in critical condition.
According to traffic officers, the crash sequence started when a Chevy Impala headed east on Perkins Road at a high rate of speed. The driver lost control on the stretch between Bluebonnet Boulevard and Essen Lane and veered off the right shoulder. The vehicle hit the concrete curb, flipped upside down, and crashed into an oncoming Dodge Ram truck.

The force of the impact wrecked both vehicles and backed up traffic for blocks during rush hour. Multiple emergency crews rushed to the scene to help the victims. Responders included officers from the Baton Rouge Police Department, paramedics from Baton Rouge EMS, deputies from the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office, and firefighters from the St. George Fire Department.
Paramedics loaded Antoine into an ambulance and drove him to a nearby hospital under emergency conditions. Medical staff worked to save the 22-year-old, but he died from his injuries a short time later. Paramedics also transported the second driver to the hospital, where they remain in critical care.
Traffic investigators blocked off Perkins Road for several hours to examine the crash site. Police officers mapped out the scene, took photos of the damaged vehicles, and measured skid marks along the curb. The Baton Rouge Police Department is leading the ongoing inquiry into the incident.
The deadly wreck caused shockwaves among local commuters who travel that section of Perkins Road every day. Neighbors in the area pointed out how quickly a routine morning drive can turn into a life-changing event. Sympathy messages continue to pour in for Antoine’s loved ones as they deal with the shock of his death.
Police investigators have not released additional details regarding the identity or status of the second victim. Officers are asking anyone who saw the crash or saw the Chevy Impala right before the wreck to reach out to traffic investigators. The investigation remains active.
