A drive along a quiet stretch of highway turned into a tragedy on a Friday afternoon. Nineteen-year-old Blem Lopez was behind the wheel of a Toyota Camry with his friend riding in the passenger seat. They were heading east on Seashore Highway near Bridgeville, Delaware, just after 12:30 p.m. on September 11.
Without warning, the sedan drifted across the center line of Route 404 near Oak Road and Nelson Drive. It moved directly into oncoming traffic. Coming from the opposite direction was a massive Peterbilt dump truck. The two vehicles collided head-on with sudden force.

The impact crushed the front end of the passenger car and set the heavy dump truck on fire. Thick smoke rose from the burning truck as the roadway ground to a halt. Nearby drivers pulled over and called emergency dispatchers as flames took over the front of the dump truck.
Emergency teams arrived at the scene around 12:40 p.m. First responders checked the Toyota sedan right away. Blem Lopez, who lived in nearby Millsboro, suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. His passenger, 23-year-old Andrea Reyes Castellanos, was alive but severely injured.
Paramedics rushed Andrea to a nearby hospital where medical staff tried to save her. Despite their efforts, she passed away a short time later. The driver of the dump truck, a 58-year-old man from Ridgely, Maryland, survived the crash. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
A second truck barely escaped the burning wreckage. A Peterbilt tractor carrying a loaded car trailer was driving directly behind the dump truck when the collision happened. The driver swerved off the road and into a ditch to avoid hitting the flaming truck. That driver was not hurt.
Both young victims were students at Washington Adventist University. The school administration expressed deep grief over the loss of two promising lives. On campus, students and faculty gathered to support one another as news of the accident spread.
State police continue to investigate what caused the car to leave its lane. Master Corporal K. Argo with the Delaware State Police Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit is handling the case. Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or captured video in the area to contact state police.
