A loose animal running across Ida West Road in Monroe County set off a sudden chain reaction Sunday night, leaving 47-year-old Petersburg motorcyclist Lance Dusseau dead.
Monroe County Sheriff deputies rushed to the scene on Ida West Road, just west of Summerfield Road, after receiving emergency calls about a severe two-motorcycle accident around dusk.

Investigators quickly determined that Lance Dusseau and 19-year-old Clayton Dusseau were traveling westbound when a dog running at large darted straight into the lane of traffic.
The lead motorcycle collided with the dog, which instantly forced the second bike into a chaotic crash sequence. Lance was thrown onto the pavement as his motorcycle went down.
First responders arrived on the scene shortly after the crash occurred, but Lance Dusseau succumbed to his injuries on site despite emergency medical efforts.
The tragic incident highlights the extreme danger loose domestic animals pose to motorcyclists on rural Monroe County backroads, where drivers have almost no time to react at night.
As deputies wrap up their investigation into the crash on Ida West Road, the Petersburg community continues to mourn the sudden loss of Lance Dusseau, remembered by friends and family for his steady presence and the lives he touched.
