Saturday morning in West Texas turned into a sudden tragedy on U.S. Highway 62 when 20-year-old Halee Williams of Brownfield died in a head-on crash. The collision happened around 3:30 a.m. on September 12, 2026, just south of County Road 670 in Terry County.

State troopers reported that Halee was behind the wheel of a 2019 Chevrolet Trax SUV. For reasons investigators are still working to figure out, her vehicle was heading northeast in the southwestbound lanes of the highway.

As Halee traveled in the wrong lane, her SUV slammed head-on into an oncoming 2017 Ford F-150 pickup truck. The impact was violent, and the Chevrolet Trax caught fire shortly after the crash occurred on the dark highway.

First responders rushed to the scene from across the area. Emergency personnel from the Terry County Sheriff’s Office, Brownfield Fire & Rescue, Wellman Fire Department, BRMC EMS, Texas DPS, and Aero Care quickly arrived, but Halee suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.

Halee was only 20 years old, with her entire life and future still ahead of her. Her sudden passing shocked her family and friends back home in Brownfield, leaving a tight-knit community grieving a young life cut far too short.

The crash also left the occupants of the pickup truck injured. The driver of the Ford F-150, 38-year-old Rodrigo Lopez of Denver City, sustained severe injuries and was careflighted to University Medical Center. His passenger, 32-year-old Breanna Cobbs of Hobbs, New Mexico, suffered minor injuries and was also taken to University Medical Center.

Texas Department of Public Safety troopers noted that weather was clear and the road was dry, with a posted speed limit of 75 mph. State reports show neither Lopez nor Cobbs was wearing a seat belt, while Halee’s seat belt usage remains unknown as troopers continue investigating what caused the wrong-way crash.
