A week of waiting ended with tough news for a local family in Wilkes County. Roger David Harris, 58, was found dead Friday morning, September 11, inside his truck off Mountain Valley Church Road in North Wilkesboro.
Harris was reported missing a week earlier on Friday, September 4. For seven days, family members and neighbors held out hope that he would show up safe.

That hope ended around 11:15 a.m. when state troopers located his vehicle down a steep drop-off. He was driving his gray Nissan Frontier west along the rural two-lane road when he lost control.
Investigators with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said the truck ran off the left side of the road. The vehicle went down an embankment and hit a tree.
First responders found Harris still buckled into his seat belt inside the cab. Emergency workers pronounced him dead at the scene.
Folks around North Wilkesboro had been keeping an eye out ever since the missing person report went up. News of the wreck spread quickly through the small community Friday afternoon.
State troopers are still looking into what made the truck leave the roadway. The Highway Patrol official crash investigation remains open.
