A late-night ride ended in tragedy on Friday when 58-year-old Toledo resident John “Johnny” Crapsey was killed in a violent motorcycle crash just west of the city. The collision happened shortly after 11 p.m. along a quiet stretch of State Route 2 in Springfield Township, leaving local authorities to piece together what went wrong in the darkness.
Johnny Crapsey was cruising along State Route 2 when his motorcycle collided with an oncoming passenger vehicle. According to state troopers who responded to the scene near Eber Road, an eastbound car attempted a left-hand turn directly into the path of Crapsey’s bike.

The impact was immediate and severe. First responders rushed to the intersection within minutes of the emergency call, but there was nothing medical crews could do for the local rider. Crapsey was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel.
The identity of the second driver involved in the crash has not been made public by law enforcement. Authorities have also not released any details regarding whether that driver suffered injuries during the impact or required hospital treatment following the wreck.
Investigators confirmed early Saturday that neither alcohol nor drug impairment appears to be a factor in the fatal collision. Troopers noted that weather and road conditions are being examined as part of the standard crash reconstruction process.
As of now, state troopers have not issued any traffic citations or filed criminal charges against the surviving driver. Investigators plan to spend the coming days reviewing vehicle telemetry, physical evidence on the roadway, and potential witness statements to determine exact speeds and rights-of-way.
The loss of Johnny Crapsey has left neighbors and fellow motorists in Lucas County mourning another life lost on Toledo-area highways. State Route 2 near Eber Road remains a key travel route for local commuters, and state police are asking anyone who witnessed the late-night crash to come forward with information.
