Xavier Smith was just 22 years old when his motorcycle ride ended on a Thursday morning in Rockingham County. He lived in New Market. Friends and family knew him as a local guy who liked the open road.
Around 10:35 a.m. on October 29, 2026, Xavier headed east on Spotswood Trail on his 2018 Yamaha. A 2026 Toyota pickup tried to cross from New Hope Road. The bike hit the side of the truck hard. Xavier flew off into the median.
Virginia State Police got to the scene fast. They said the motorcycle was going at a high rate of speed. The crash left Xavier with injuries that proved too much.
Medics took him to Sentara RMH Medical Center. Doctors worked on him but could not save his life. He was pronounced dead there.
The two people in the pickup came from Pawleys Island, South Carolina. Neither one got hurt. Police are still looking into what happened at that crossing.
Xavier had his whole life in front of him. Now that road is closed. People who knew him in New Market feel the empty space he left behind.
The investigation goes on. For now, the intersection stays quiet after the noise of that morning crash.
