A 16-year-old girl lost her life Tuesday evening when a gunman inside a passing vehicle sprayed bullets into a parked SUV on Detroit’s east side.
Officers rushed to the 4700 block of Chalmers Street around 6:49 p.m. after 911 dispatchers received multiple calls reporting shots fired in the residential neighborhood.
Four people were sitting inside a Jeep Cherokee when a dark-colored sedan pulled alongside them and someone opened fire without warning.
Bullets struck two of the occupants, leaving the 16-year-old girl fatally wounded before the shooter sped away from the scene.
Emergency medical personnel arrived shortly after officers secured the block, but could not save the teenage girl.
Paramedics treated the second shooting victim at the scene before transport, while two other passengers inside the Jeep managed to escape without physical injuries.
Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison confirmed the second victim’s condition remains unknown as investigators work to gather more details.
Police classified the two unharmed passengers as witnesses and interviewed them at the scene to piece together the sequence of events.
Homicide detectives continue canvassing Chalmers Street for surveillance video and eyewitness accounts, with no suspect description released as the investigation remains active.
