Detroit police detectives are searching for clues after a dark-colored sedan pulled up to a Jeep Cherokee and opened fire on four people sitting inside.

The targeted shooting happened around 6:49 p.m. Tuesday along the 4700 block of Chalmers Street on the city’s east side.

Shots fired from the sedan instantly turned the quiet evening block into an active crime scene as nearby residents dialed 911 for help.

A 16-year-old girl sitting inside the Jeep took direct gunfire and died from her injuries before she could be saved.

A second passenger hit by the gunfire required immediate emergency care, though police have not released updates on that person’s physical status.

Chief Todd Bettison stated that two additional passengers inside the vehicle avoided the spray of bullets entirely and are assisting detectives with the case.

Investigators have not yet identified a clear motive or established a suspect description as they review local camera feeds in the area.

Police urge anyone living near Chalmers Street with security footage or information regarding the dark-colored sedan to contact the department immediately.
