Unidentified Woman, Atlanta, GA: Firefighters Find Dead Resident In Smoke-Damaged Apartment

Firefighters responded to an emergency fire call at an apartment complex along the 1700 block of Staunton Road in Atlanta around 9:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Emergency crews arrived at the property expecting active flames but found no visible fire or exterior building damage.

Firefighters entered one of the units and discovered smoke damage throughout the residence.

Crews searched the smoke-filled rooms and located an adult woman dead inside the apartment.

Authorities believe the victim lived at the apartment and was in her 20s.

Officials have not released the woman’s name while they work to make a positive identification and notify her family.

Atlanta police officers secured the property to preserve evidence inside the unit.

Homicide detectives, arson investigators, and the Medical Examiner’s Office are treating the case as a suspicious death while the investigation continues.
