Virginia State Police are investigating a mysterious highway shooting that left a person hospitalized Tuesday night. The incident happened along the eastbound lanes of Interstate 66 near Vienna during the evening rush.
A Toyota RAV4 was cruising down the highway near the Nutley Street exit at approximately 8:14 p.m. Four individuals were inside the SUV when a single gunshot suddenly rang out.
The bullet slammed directly into the left rear window of the moving vehicle. Glass shattered instantly across the back seat, and one of the passengers was hit.
The driver managed to maintain control of the RAV4 and bring the vehicle to a safe stop. Emergency crews arrived quickly after receiving frantic calls about a shooting on the interstate.
Paramedics treated the injured passenger on the side of the road before transporting them to an area hospital. Medical staff confirmed the victim’s injuries are non-life-threatening.
The remaining three occupants in the RAV4 were not hurt in the incident. Police have not said whether the shooting stemmed from a road rage encounter or if the SUV was targeted at random.
Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage and looking for potential witnesses who were on I-66 at the time. Anyone who saw anything unusual is asked to call 804-750-8798 or send an email to questions@vsp.virginia.gov.
