A Tuesday night drive along Interstate 66 turned into a terrifying experience for four people traveling through Fairfax County. They were riding eastbound in a Toyota RAV4 around 8:14 p.m. near the Nutley Street Interchange.
The group was moving along with normal highway traffic when a sudden loud bang echoed through the SUV cabin. Nobody inside knew what had happened at first as the vehicle continued down the road.
Seconds later, panic spread through the vehicle as a passenger sitting in the back seat reported being hurt. The sudden impact caught everyone completely off guard.
The driver realized the severity of the situation after seeing broken glass across the back row. A gunshot had struck and shattered the left rear window of the RAV4.
Calls went out to emergency responders, who rushed to the scene along the highway. Paramedics treated the injured backseat passenger right away on the side of the road.
Medical crews loaded the victim into an ambulance and drove them to a nearby hospital. State police confirmed the passenger suffered non-life-threatening injuries from the gunfire.
The three other occupants inside the SUV escaped physical harm, but the attack left everyone shaken. Investigators are now working to figure out who fired the shot as the victim recovers.
