State troopers are investigating the details of a fatal two-vehicle wreck on a West Texas highway on Thursday evening. The crash claimed the life of 24-year-old Michael Morris Hayden when his van collided with a loaded livestock truck.
The wreck occurred at 5:54 p.m. on September 17 along U.S. Highway 83/84 in Jones County. Officers reported that both vehicles were heading northbound, about a quarter-mile west of Farm to Market Road 126 North, right before the impact.

Hayden, who lived in Rising Star, was driving a 2024 Ford E-350 van. According to preliminary reports from state police, Hayden slowed down and steered onto the right shoulder of the road, preparing to turn back around in the opposite direction.
Following behind the van was a 2003 Peterbilt 379 truck tractor pulling a 2017 Wilson livestock trailer. As the big rig approached the spot, Hayden turned from the shoulder to make a U-turn, pulling directly across the lane.
The driver of the Peterbilt could not stop or avoid the turning van. The semi hit the Ford van broadside, pushing both vehicles off the main driving lane. The big rig slid into the center median and overturned on its side.
First responders arrived at the scene shortly after the crash was reported. Hayden was wearing his seatbelt inside the van, but the force of the broadside hit resulted in fatal injuries. Medical personnel pronounced him dead on site.
State police confirmed that Hayden was the only person inside the Ford van. The driver of the Peterbilt was uninjured in the collision. Troopers wrapped up their initial site work after tow crews cleared the overturned semi and the van from the median.
