Sunday afternoon in Athens County turned tragic when local resident Thomas Burson died after a single-vehicle motorcycle accident. The 45-year-old was riding through his hometown of The Plains when the crash happened along South Plains Road. Friends and neighbors in the small town are now coping with the sudden loss of a familiar face.
It was around 1:35 p.m. when Burson headed southbound on South Plains Road. He was riding his 2005 Harley-Davidson, taking a routine trip just north of Athens. Weather conditions were clear as he traveled down the familiar stretch of pavement.

For reasons investigators are still trying to figure out, the motorcycle drifted off the right side of the roadway. The bike clipped a concrete curb and slammed directly into a road sign along the shoulder. The impact threw Burson off the Harley, leaving him seriously injured on the side of the road.
Passersby called emergency services immediately after seeing the wrecked bike. Athens County EMS crews rushed to the scene on South Plains Road within minutes. First responders worked quickly to stabilize Burson before loading him into an ambulance.
Paramedics first transported Burson to Fairfield Medical Center for urgent care. Because his injuries were so severe, doctors decided he needed specialized medical attention. They arranged an immediate transfer to Adena Regional Medical Center.
Despite the best efforts of medical teams at both facilities, Burson could not recover from the trauma caused by the crash. Hospital staff pronounced him dead shortly after his arrival. The news hit local residents hard as word spread through the community.
Burson was well-known around The Plains, where neighbors remember him as a steady presence in the area. People across Athens County have spent the past few days sharing stories and supporting his grieving family. Local community members say his sudden absence leaves a void that will be felt for a long time.
State troopers with the Ohio State Highway Patrol are heading up the crash investigation. Officers are looking into speed, mechanical issues, and road conditions to figure out what caused the Harley to leave the lane. Official updates will be released as troopers finish their report.
